Description
This hand-knotted Kashan carpet features the famous tree of life design with an array of different flowers and animals representing the famous gardens of Kashan.
Kashan rugs are high in quality and make with incorporations of silk and wool. The majority of Kashan’s typically have a central medallion and Persian floral motifs forming the pattern.
They have been crafted since the 17th century during the Safavid dynasty, with many scholars suggesting that many designs date back to the early 16th century. Kashan rugs are recognized as amongst the most magnificent and celebrated of all Persian rugs. In addition, the city is home to the oldest gardens of Iran- the Fin Garden, and this Garden also acts as a muse for many of the city’s designs.
Situated in the Isfahan province, Kashan is one of the oldest cities in Iran. It was of the principal seats of the pre-historic civilization.
Encircled by desert, Kashan cannot source locally. Originally Merino wool was imported from Manchester (UK) to create some of Iran’s most delicate carpets. In more recent times, Kashan rugs have used wool sourced from Sabzevar (in the northeast of Iran), which produces some of the very best thread in Iran.
Most Kashan carpets today have a similar design with a central medallion and Persian floral motifs, broadly incorporating the Shah Abbasi motif forming the pattern; however, as with most regions, designs can vary. Antique Kashan rugs are among Iran’s most beautiful rugs with natural dyes and stunning natural patinas. Popular colours are ivory, red, blue and soft greens. In addition, the city is home to the oldest existing Garden in Iran, the Fin Garden, and this Garden also acts as a muse for many of the city’s designs.
